Avaaz is a civic human rights organization that was founded in the year 2007. The name Avaaz means the voice of the people thus the organization is in the business of promoting global activism and speaking on behalf of the people on issues of public interests such as corruption, poverty, conflict and climate change among other pertinent issues. Avaaz mission is to close the gap between the world we have and the world that ought to be.
Avaaz addresses most of its issues through online campaigns and as a result instantly mobilize its followers and the larger public worldwide to confront injustices wherever they may be. The organization has enjoyed a rapid growth ever since it was launched in 2007 and boast of having reached 8 million members and is still climbing fast. Avaaz campaigns are purely on set values and are on the conviction that we are all human beings who have a responsibility towards each other and to the future generation. As a result of having a common set of values and beliefs, Avaaz members participate in campaigns that are issue-based and are intended to make the world a better place. The founder, president and executive director of Avaaz is Ricken Patel. Patel is an alumnus of Balliol College, Oxford University where he studied politics, philosophy, and economics. Patel also holds a Masters in Public Policy from the Harvard University. Patel has spent most of his career life serving in International Crisis Group in different countries such a Sudan, Afghanistan and Sierra Leone. He acquired his experience in online activism while he was working for MoveOn.org in the US.
