Giants Focus on 2018 Season

Prior to the 2017 NFL season, there were many different experts that expected that the New York Giants could once again return to their Super Bowl form and compete for a division and league title. While the team had a lot of Promise due to the amount of weapons that had on offense, a lot of different injuries and overall other struggles quickly turn the season upside down. While the Giants were widely expected by some to at least compete for a playoff spot, those expectations were thrown out the window very early on. The team ended up finishing with a very disappointing record or just 3 wins and 13 losses.

A lot of the struggles with the team were due to injuries that occurred early in the year. While the team was considered to have the best wide receiver core in the league, all three of the team’s top receivers suffered major injuries during the year. This made it impossible for quarterback Eli Manning to throw the ball down the field and the team ended up getting blown out of a lot of games.

Now that the 2017 season is over, the Giants are focused on improving for the future (http://www.espn.com/blog/new-york-giants/post/_/id/55909/giants-coaching-search-steve-wilks-gets-to-show-why-players-gravitates-toward-him). This offseason the team and franchise will have a lot of different important decisions to make.

One of the biggest decisions that the team will have to make is what to do about their quarterback position. During the 2017 season, quarterback Eli Manning was benched for the first time in his entire career and had one week in which he did not even start the game. While the quarterback has won two Super Bowls and is likely going to be in the Hall of Fame someday, it does not seem clear whether or not the Giants are willing to move forward with him in the future. The Giants will end up having a very high draft pick and some believe that they could end up drafting a quarterback with that pick in an attempt to build for the future.

While a new quarterback could be a big help for the future, they also need to focus on other areas. The team showed that they have an overall lack of depth and need a lot of pieces to fill in the gaps.

New York Transit Authority Begins Electric Bus Service

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) is taking steps to help make the air of New York City a bit cleaner through the use of electric buses. Ten such vehicles have been deployed for use in the waterfront areas in Brooklyn and Queens and on two routes, M-42 and M-50, which connect other parts of the city.
In order to accommodate the needs of the vehicles, six charging stations will be installed at the Grand Avenue depot and another at the Williamsburg Bridge Plaza. The vehicles will be used over a trial period that is expected to last three years. If the vehicles are efficient and successful, 60 more electric buses will be added to the MTA fleet. In addition to the electric vehicles, the public corporation has ordered 110 buses that operate on natural gas. These vehicles will replace older buses that currently serve the Bronx and Brooklyn areas. Most of the MTA fleet will still be comprised of conventional vehicles, with the corporation having recently purchased more than 600 diesel-powered buses. More about the planned used of electric buses in New York City is available at www.reddit.com/r/nyc.
New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo noted that the upgrades in its fleet will give the MTA an opportunity to try out vehicles that are more modern and easier on the environment. Accusations that the MTA is moving too slowly to reduce emissions have been refuted its managing director, Ronnie Hakim, who said that he prefers a slower transition to the new technology to avoid mistakes that could be costly to the city. This is especially true when considering that other cities have reported problems with electric buses in temperatures that are unusually high or low.
In addition to protecting the environment, the purchase of the new buses should benefit the nation’s economy when considering that the vehicles are American-built. The vehicles were made by the Proterra company, based in California, and by New Flyer Industries, a Canadian firm that does manufacturing in the United States. Proterra will also be responsible for installing the charging stations.
The MTA is the nation’s largest public transit authority, carrying some 11 million passengers every weekday. It also operates seven toll bridges and two tunnels.

Winter Storm Causes Chaos At New York’s JFK Airport

The shockwaves caused by New York City’s John F Kennedy Airport going down are felt around the world. The airport receives more international traffic than any other United States airport.

The impact became real recently when disruptions caused by a powerful winter storm were compounded by confusions in communication as to whether the airport was, in fact, up an running caused a number of problems.

Over 7000 flights were canceled in response to the storm causing many travelers to be stranded abroad after finding they would have no return flights home.

The chaos at JFK was sometimes unbearable: Thousands of passengers arrived at the airport only to find that their connecting flights would be delayed for hours. Equipment on the ground malfunctioned due to the cold temperatures and repair efforts were slowed due to high winds and the ice that was on the ground.

The New York/New Jersey Port Authority made the decision to close the airport on Thursday when the storm was at its peak. This meant that incoming flights to JFK would be diverted to nearby airports. But when the airport reopened for business, the flight diversions continued because there were not enough gates operating at JFK to handle both the flights that had been delayed the day before and the newly arriving flights of the present day.

The Federal Aviation Administration stepped in Saturday and suspended the arrivals of some flights. One inbound flight from Moscow was forced to turn back midway through the flight and dozens of other flights were forced to land elsewhere, even as far away as Detroit. In total, at least 230 flights have been diverted with over half of those diversions being international flights with JFK as their destination.

There were frustrations on the part of travelers stranded at JFK and many took to social media to voice their complaints. One common complaint was that travelers were not allowed to retrieve their luggage while bags continued to pile up in baggage claim areas.

The airport seemed near to normal operations on Monday despite the fact that more than 100 flights were canceled at JFK and other area airports as snow and ice were once again in the New York area forecast.

New York City to Separate Itself From the Fossil Fuel Industry

New York City is taking steps to separate itself from the fossil fuel industry while simultaneously challenging the “oil friendly” administration of President Donald Trump. Mayor Bill de Blasio has announced plans to divest the city’s five pension funds from businesses that he largely blames for climate change.
The actual divestment could be complicated, according to the city’s comptroller, and could take some time to complete. The current goal is for completion of the process within five years. The pension funds, which total nearly $190 billion, have been set aside to cover the retirement costs of city workers, including teachers and police officers. The goal is to complete the divestment without causing financial harm to the retirees.
This will be the first time a major city in the United States has taken such steps, but it will not be the only action by New York to deal with climate change. According to the mayor, the city is taking legal action against five oil companies over the same issue in hopes of making them pay for the damage he says they have created. The five companies are BP, Chevron, ConocoPhillips, Exxon Mobile and Shell. More information about the legal action being taken is available at www.reddit.com/r/nyc.
According to official records, the city has experienced costly damage caused by flooding and erosion, with both conditions directly attributable to climate change. Additional costs were incurred as a result of Hurricane Sandy, which struck New York and surrounding areas in 2012. Many scientists believe that climate change has increased the number and intensity of such storms. The plaintiffs in the lawsuit also claim that representatives of the oil industry had for decades denied the known fact that that fossil fuel use can harm the environment. This issue alone is currently the center of a separate investigation by New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman.
The action by New York City is also a direct challenge to Trump, who has expressed the desire to remove the United States from the international treaty known as the Paris Agreement. The city has received praise from the former United Nations climate chief and architect of the treaty, Christiana Figueres. She noted that such action represents the first step in eventually creating an economy that is free of fossil fuels.

Barney’s New York Future In Jeopardy

Barneys New York, is a retail giant that has been a centerpiece for retail shopping in New York City for decades. However, fans of the retail giant might have to look somewhere else for their retail goods.  The Barneys New York future on Madison Avenue is definitely in jeopardy because the retail store and their landlord are in a rental tug of war.

Barneys New York In Arbitration

The lease for the retailer, Barneys New York, is almost at an end. The lease expires for the store in 2019. However, Barneys New York, and the landlord are at odds and are able to come to a mutual agreement over the rental cost or lease. Consequently, an arbitrator was called in to help the two sides come to an agreement and settle the dispute. Stories surfaced that the dispute is mainly over a fair market value for the property or land. Certainly, real estate in New York is high. Clearly, real estate on Madison Avenue is right in the middle of a prime market for retailers. The $20 million dollar deal to lease the prime real estate is definitely due for an overhaul.

Bye Bye Barneys New York Store

Certainly, quite a few people living in New York might wonder about the fate of the retail store, if the arbitrator is not able to bring the two sides together in an agreement. The fate of the store is clearly in the hands of the arbitrator. Two things could happen. The arbitrator sides with Barneys New York and the store stays on the Madison Avenue spot. The arbitrator agrees with the landlord and Barney’s moves from the Madison Avenue Location. Certainly, losing such a world wide famous store will affect the city and people that enjoy shopping at the store. Stay tuned, there is more to come on this heated situation. The arbitrator is currently in the middle of studying the situation very carefully. A ruling is due very soon.

Michel Terpin: The Racers Dream

Brazil is known for its diversified culture and environment. However, one thing unites them all: sports. Rally Driving has turned from one of the deadliest sports in the country to one of the most popular, and the racers who are taking part in the event proper are becoming famous with the public. Some of the most famous racers are also heading the Brazilian beaches to surf, and during the weekends, they could also visit the stadiums to prepare for annual championships. Michel Terpin loves to make a road trip with his brother back to their hometowns, or sometimes, the two prefer to use the roads in the countryside to practice their crafts. Michel Terpin’s brother, Rodrigo Terpin, is also known as a tremendous Brazilian Racer. Together, the Terpin Brothers will be able to face any trials that they will be seeking along the way.

As a young kid, Michel Turpin has been trained by his dad to love sports. His dad, Jack Turpin, is one of the most famous Brazilian basketball players. He is proud every time he sees his children being able to become famous in their ways, but he never expected that rally driving has so many fans, especially in Brazil where most could not buy their vehicles. Together, the Torino Brothers are cruising the streets of the country to see who needs their ingredients the most. They had to search for ingredients under a dim light from a flashlight. The dream of Michel Terpin is to be able to bring back gold so that the school he is currently attended will be closed for a while for quarantine.

Michel Terpin and Rodrigo Terpin continue to practice because they would never know if they can win the challenge that was given to them. They are required to practice on a rough road or any roads that have the smallest number of vehicles passing the day. Because of their passion for doing rally driving, it seems like the course given to Michel Terpin and Rodrigo Terpin is easy to navigate. However, they would have to endure a long drive before they can declare that their road trip has to come to an end.
